Are you an adult writer seeking to break into the children’s literature market? I recommend starting by joining the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and taking advantage of its many offerings. Other resources are offered in my LinkedIn post.

If after exploring these avenues you have questions about writing for children, I offer a limited number of one-hour mentoring consultations. I also offer critiques of picture book manuscripts.

readers’ advisory support

Why is this a thing? I come into contact with many young people who think they don’t like to read. Some say, “I’m just not a reader.” While there are issues that can stand in the way of developing a love of reading, in reality, most often they just haven’t come across a book or type of book that they like.

Additionally, as some young people move up into junior high and high school, they are often required at school to choose a book that is not a graphic novel or Wimpy Kid, at a time when they are no longer visiting a school library regularly as part of class, as in younger grades.

Of course, my first recommendation is always for readers to visit their school librarian. My second recommendation is to visit an independent bookstore (including the one where I work). But the reality is, sometimes additional guidance is needed. I offer readers’ advisory consultations, which encompass: a 20-minute virtual consultation, a personalized list of recent, well-reviewed, high-quality books and resources based on the consultation; and the option for a brief, free follow-up call.
